TIME Inc. agrees use of private management papers on Churchill series
11th May 2015
TIME has agreed to author David Lough using excerpts the private memos and cables exchanged by its most senior staff, including chairman Henry Luce, while they dealt with Winston Churchill.
TIME’s LIFE magazine led the world-record publishing deal to buy Churchill’s memoirs of the Second World War. It then had to cajole the material out of Churchill over the following seven years while Churchill resumed his political career. The private papers reveal the story of how LIFE won the bidding war and how it ‘gruntled’ its author, for example by buying him a replacement poodle when his first was run over and by paying for Churchill’s expensive writing holidays abroad.
